George Hall McCune was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 8, 1903. He received his B.A. degree from Grove City College [PA], and his M.A. degree in American History from the University of Pittsburgh. He graduated with his Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota in 1942. From 1943 to 1945, McCune worked as a historian for the War Department, Office of Chief Engineers.
